Maxspect Connect 101: Installation and Setup
It is incredible how technology has changed over the last decade. It is hard to believe that this little device here has far more computing power than the machines that helped NASA and the US put the first human on the moon.
In today’s world, our dependence on mobile phones has exceeded the mere receive/send calls or text messages. Today, we rely on our phones to give us directions where to go, take photos and video of our most precious moments, remind us of an upcoming meeting, ensure that we do not oversleep and show up to work late and, for us reef hobbyists, allow us to monitor and control or aquariums.
Maxspect, the creator of the Gyre Flow pump, RAZOR LED light and the brand new Razor X, Recurve and Turbine Duo have released the “Maxspect Connect” module also known as the ICV6.
The Maxspect Connect is an easy-to-setup link box that when connected to your home network, allows you to control all Maxspect products via a single mobile app. There is no need for an app to control the RAZOR and another app to control the Recurve. One single Maxspect Connect module and one single mobile app is all you need.
In this video, I will show you how easy it is to install and setup a Maxspect Connect module.
Before we start, let’s make sure your new purchase includes:
Installation of the Maxspect Connect module is simple. Aside from the power cable, the Maxspect Connect is completely wireless. This means that we can install the module away from water and high humidity. All we need to do is make sure that the module is within 30 feet of the products it will be controlling. You can mount the module using the included mounting bracket.
Once the module is properly mounted, we can go ahead and connect the power cable to the module and then connect the power cable to the power adapter. Finally connect the power adapter to the outlet and turn the module ON.
Installation of the hardware is now complete.
Once the app is downloaded to your mobile device, go ahead and start it up. As soon as you open the app you will see a message that you do not have any ICV6 modules installed. Since this is a brand-new installation, it is OK to ignore the message.
On the upper right-hand corner of the app, press of the plus (+) sign. The app will offer you two options to connect to the Maxspect Module.
The first option is connecting your module to your home network.
The advantage of this connection is that you can access the Module from any mobile device that is connected to your home Wi-Fi. There is no need to connect via Bluetooth or change your mobile device to a different network every time you want to connect to the Maxspect Connect module.
The disadvantage is that if your home Wi-Fi network fails, you will not be able to connect to the module.
Now, I can already hear some of you asking… what about my lights running while the Wi-Fi is offline. Let me assure you that it will not be an issue. The Maxspect Connect stores your light schedule in it’s memory and the memory of every fixture it controls, so, if the connection is severed, the fixtures will continue to run normally using the light schedule stored in it’s local memory.
The second option is to connect your mobile device directly to the module.
The advantage of this option is a direct connection to the Maxspect Connect module. You do not rely on your Wi-Fi network to make the connection. You can still access the ICV6 from any device that is in the same physical location as the module.
The disadvantage of this option is that since you are connecting directly to the module, you need to go to your mobile phone Wi-Fi settings and connect to the Maxspect Connect Wi-Fi signal every time you want to control it. Once you are done modifying your light schedule, then you have to manually return your mobile device to your home network.
In this video we will select option 1 as I personally do not want to have to switch my phone’s settings every time I want to access my Maxspect Products. All I want to do is start the app and make adjustments.
Before we select option 1, we must make sure that our mobile device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to a 5GHz network, the connection to the Maxspect Connect module will fail so please, if your mobile device is connected to a 5GHz network, pause the video, go to your mobile device Wi-Fi settings and switch over to a 2.4GHz network.
Once you are connected to a 2.4GHz network, let’s go ahead and tap on “Connect through a Wi-Fi wireless router”.
The next screen on the app reminds us to make sure that our mobile device is in fact connected to the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect the module to. Let’s go ahead and tap on Next.
Now the app will run a scan of the network to see if there are any other Modules connected. Since this is our first module, we can tap on the Next button once the app has completed it’s scan.
In order to connect the module to your network using your phone, please make sure that you and your mobile device are standing right next to the module. Now, while the Maxspect Connect is on, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds until you see a red light flashing. As soon as you see the red light start to flash, release the power button.
Go back to your mobile device and now tap on the Next button.
We are almost done! Now the app will ask us to first verify that the Wi-Fi network on the screen is the same network we want to connect our Maxspect Connect to. Remember that this network must be a 2.4GHz network. If the app is showing a 5GHz network, then temporarily close the app, go to your mobile device Wi-Fi settings and switch to a 2.4GHz network. Come back to the app and hit the arrow on the upper left hand side to go back to the previous screen. Now hit the Next button and then verify that the correct Wi-Fi network is now listed.
Now that we have the correct Wi-Fi network, all we need to do is type our Wi-Fi password. This is the same password you use to connect new devices to your home network. Remember that passwords are case sensitive so make sure you type your password correctly.
Once you typed in your password, tap on the Next button.
The app will now transmit the settings to the Maxspect Connect and it will let us know when the connection is successful.
Finally, we can tap of the Next button and your Maxspect Connect has been successfully added to your home Wi-Fi network.
On this new screen, you will be able to edit your Maxspect Connect. If you want to change the name of the module, just tap on the Gear image and then tap on Rename. Type the new name of the module and hit Confirm.
If you want to check and make sure your Module has the latest firmware, just tap on the same Gear icon and then select “Firmware Upgrade”. You will immediately be given the option to install it if a new firmware is available.
To proceed and add devices to your Maxspect Connect such as your RAZOR X, Recurve and Turbine Duo Pump, just tap on the “Control” button and follow the instructions provided with the specific fixture you wish to connect.
